Water and Eartha
My mother loved the water. She always wanted her homes to be near running water. The last house she lived in was on a river, which gave her much enjoyment watching from her bed, the final days of her life. Her prior two homes had landscaped ponds on the property, that she had aerated to create the sound of movement while the oxygen flow helped keep them clean. Interestingly enough, the first house she bought in 1957, the one in Beverly Hills where I grew up, had no natural water, only a man-made, free-form swimming pool. So, did her need for water evolve over time? Or, had she just ignored it in her younger years? Ironically, most of her life, my mother believed she was born January 26th, under the sign of Aquarius, a water sign. Maybe that belief didn't fuel the need to live near water as much as when she finally discovered (at age 71) her true date of birth was January 17th, the sign of Capricorn, an earth sign. After all, earth cannot exist without water. As strong as my mother's connection was with nature, I find it hard to believe this absolute fact cannot be pure coincidence. My mother was always very deliberate. Interesting, that she never bought a house on the beach. Although, as I think about it, it actually makes sense. My mother, her given name, Eartha, had a richness and depth like the soil. Not grainy and unsteady, like sand. Not much grows in sand. And my mother was definitely like well fertilized 'earthy' soil.
